The Southard Methodist Church located on the corner of Kent and Church
Roads, Southard, was tucked away in the southwest corner of Howell Township where it
served Methodists for over 97 years.
The Church was built in 1866 on ground donated by Israel Reynolds. The original trustees were Garrett LeCompte, Gilbert Layton, Robert Gant, William Reynolds, and James Cooper. The Rev. Samuel Asa was the first pastor.
About 1870 a schoolhouse was built, the revivals and camp meetings held at the schoolhouse drew Methodists from as far away as Lakewood, then Bergen Irons Works, who had to walk the five or six miles to the meetings.
