Samuel received a commission as surgeon March 4, 1775, was assigned to duty in
Boston with the 18th regiment, commanded by Edmund Phinney. Col. John Fellow's (Berkshire
Co.) Regt.; enlsited June 28, 1775; service,1 mo.7 days; also Capt. King's Co., Fellow's
Regt. . Samuel served as a surgeon during the Revolutionary War in the artillery
department, under General Knox, and was frequently in the company of General Washington. He
was with the army at Valley Forge and on the field to care for the wounded at the Battle of Monmouth.

and was killed in a skirmish, 1777, near Crown Point the day after the evacuation of the

As an army lieutenant he led an expedition (18067) to Spanish NEW MEXICO,
discovering the Colorado peak that is named after him. Promoted to brigadier general
during the WAR OF 1812, he was killed in the successful assault on York (now Toronto).
