MonocacyMonocacy : The Battle That Saved Washington
by Benjamin Franklin Cooling
At Monoacy, Maryland in 1864 occurred the decisive battle of Lee's offensive against Washington D. C. Cooling's civil war history focuses on the events of this battle, considering the delay which cost the Confederacy its chance, and providing a lively account of the battle which saved Washington. Recommended for avid Civil War historians.

The 14th Regiment played a major role in saving our nation's capitol, Washington, D.C. For its steadfast defense and fighting withdrawal in the face of numerically superior Confederate forces at the Battle of Monocacy near Frederick, Maryland, the regiment became known as the "Monocacy Regiment."  Many members of the Whitesville families fought in that battle.
